GST Exclusive Formula (Add GST)

Formula: Total Amount = Base Amount × (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100)

Example: If a product's base price is ₹1,000 and GST rate is 18%:

Total Amount = 1,000 × (1 + 18 ÷ 100) = 1,000 × 1.18 = ₹1,180
GST Amount = 1,180 − 1,000 = ₹180

GST Inclusive Formula (Remove GST)

Formula: Base Amount = Total Amount ÷ (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100)

Example: If a product's total price (including GST) is ₹1,180 and GST rate is 18%:

Base Amount = 1,180 ÷ (1 + 18 ÷ 100) = 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000
GST Amount = 1,180 − 1,000 = ₹180

What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax is known as GST. In India, goods and services are subject to GST, which replaced many other forms of taxation, including Value Added Tax, Service Tax, Central Excise, and other tax levies.

It came into effect on 1st July 2017 under the "One Nation, One Tax" idea. One thing people often get wrong: GST is a destination-based tax, so the money goes to whichever state the product or service is actually used in, not the state it was manufactured or shipped from.

CGST (Central GST)
This is the Centre's share, collected on sales made within a single state.
SGST (State GST)
Collected by the state government on the same intra-state sale, alongside CGST.
IGST (Integrated GST)
Applies when goods or services are moved from one state to another. The Central Government collects this one.
UTGST (Union Territory GST)
Used in place of SGST for Union Territories like Delhi and Chandigarh.

GST Rates in India (2026)

Different categories of products are taxable at varying rates. GST is classified into four rates based on the products and is updated from time to time by the GST Council.

0% GST (Nil / Exempt Goods)

For essentials that are kept out of GST altogether.

Examples: Fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, salt, healthcare services, and educational services.

5% GST (Basic Necessities)

Covers day-to-day household items along with some transport and hospitality services.

Examples: Soap, toothpaste, butter, ghee, bicycles, economy flights.

18% GST (Standard Goods & Services)

This is where most goods and services fall; it's the GST slab you'll encounter most often.

Examples: Mobiles, laptops, ACs, refrigerators, restaurants, telecom, and IT services.

40% GST (Luxury & Sin Goods)

Reserved for luxury purchases and items that attract a compensation cess.

Examples: Luxury cars, tobacco, pan masala, sugary drinks, and casinos.
Smart Tips for GST Compliance & Tax Saving

A little discipline with GST paperwork saves you a lot of trouble later. Some things worth building into a routine:

Always Issue Proper Tax Invoices
Don't skip the details like GSTIN, HSN, or SAC code, the applicable rate, and the CGST/SGST/IGST breakup; all need to be on the invoice.
File Returns on Time
GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, and the annual return all have due dates for a reason. Missing them can hold up your Input Tax Credit, too.
Claim Input Tax Credit
Whatever GST you've already paid on your purchases can be set against what you owe. It's one of the easier ways to lower your actual tax outgo.
Maintain Digital Records
Keep invoices, receipts, credit notes, and purchase bills saved digitally for at least six years, as auditors and return checks tend to ask for these.
Stay Updated
Rules and rates get revised more often than people expect. It's worth checking official GST notifications every so often rather than assuming nothing's changed.
Monitor Compliance Reports
Using a GST calculator or software to track pending filings and ITC mismatches beats finding out about a problem after a penalty notice shows up.
GST Terminology

A few terms that come up constantly once you start dealing with GST regularly.

GST (Goods and Services Tax)
The tax on goods and services sold across India under a single framework.
Input Tax Credit (ITC)
The tax you have already paid on your purchases and can deduct from your sales tax liability.
Output Tax
The GST a seller charges on whatever they sell.
Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM)
Normally, the seller pays GST, but under RCM, that responsibility shifts to the buyer instead.
Composition Scheme
Meant for smaller businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore, who'd rather pay a flat rate than deal with ITC calculations.
GSTIN
The 15-digit number every GST-registered business is given.
HSN / SAC Code
HSN codes classify goods, while SAC codes classify services. These codes determine the applicable GST rate.
E-Way Bill
Required for transporting goods worth over ₹50,000 from one state to another.
CGST / SGST / IGST
The total GST paid depends on whether the sale is within the same state or across state borders.
GST Return
A filing that shows a taxpayer's sales, purchases, and tax paid during a specific period.
GST Portal
The government's official website for GST registration, return filing, and tax payments.
Exempt Goods
Items on which GST does not apply, such as food grains, milk, basic healthcare, and other notified essentials.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What exactly does this GST calculator show me?
Once you enter an amount, it works out the base price, the GST amount, and the total, all in one go, based on whether you're adding or removing tax.
What's the actual difference between adding and removing GST?
Adding GST starts from the base price and works out what you'd pay, including tax. Removing GST does the opposite; you already have a tax-inclusive figure and want to know what it was before tax got added.
How do I know which GST rate applies to my item?
It comes down to how that item is classified under GST, check its HSN or SAC code, since that's what determines whether it falls under 0%, 5%, 18% or 40%.
Why does a single sale sometimes show both CGST and SGST?
That happens on intra-state sales; the tax gets split evenly between the two. Cross-state sales work differently and fall under IGST instead, which covers the tax in one piece.
Does this work for services as well as physical goods?
Yes, the calculation itself doesn't change. Only the rate does, depending on how the good or service is classified.
Can I use this calculator's output directly on an invoice?
It's fine for a quick check, but for actual invoicing or filing, confirm the rate on the GST portal or with your accountant. This GST calculator is built for speed, not as a substitute for that.
